The Plastic Bag
Since supermarkets started charging 5p per plastic bag, fashion design and branding has seen a shift to reflect this change. The once disposable bag has now become a much desired designer accessory.
We haven’t been using them for long (about half a century), but they’ve steadily been overused and have had climate implications which make us stop and think about how we use plastic. Supermarkets are now producing stronger disposable bags with the intention of being reused, not seen as rubbish.
In fashion, the PVC accessory is where it all started. The see through bag is now all over the Celine, Burberry and Chanel runways as if it’s a masterpiece of design. The plastic bag has become a window into luxury products, losing its value once opened. Some even buy 2 sets of products, one to keep sealed in the bag for display and the other to open and use.
Plastic bags were only invented in the 50s and started to pick up in popularity in the 60s - British Plastic Federation
